I don’t need to hear Valerie say she loves me to know it’s true. I can read it in her eyes. It’s my ego that craves the words, although I love that she doesn’t succumb to my demands. Mixing pain with pleasure is an addiction, and like me, she wants that.

Leaning back, I zip up my pants, but Valerie remains bent over the desk with her eyes closed.

“Did you fall asleep on me, kitty cat?”

“No. I’m not sure I can move, is all.”

I chuckle, and she opens her eyes to glower at me. “Keep laughing. You have no idea what’s coming for you.”

“I can’t wait.” I walk closer to inspect my handiwork. The lines of my name are a little shaky, but it makes them more unique. “Not bad. We should wipe it off with antiseptic.”

“Sure. I have some right here.” She sticks her hand in her skirt pocket, then takes it out again, flipping me off.

“We’re in a lab. They must have something in here.” I offer her my hand, and I’m surprised when she takes it.

“Do you always carve your name in your hookups’ backs?”

My brows furrow, but my lips twitch upward while a pleasant feeling spreads through my chest. “Who’s suffering from retroactive jealousy now?”

“I’m not.” She pouts, crossing her arms.

I grab her shoulders and invade her space, bringing my mouth inches from hers. “Why would I write my name on anyone else? You’re the only woman for me, kitty cat, have been since I met you.”

“Good.”

I give her a quick peck on the lips. “You’re cute when you’re jealous.”

“I’m not jealous,” she insists, then steps away from me, grabs my switchblade from the table and puts it in her pocket. “Let’s look for the antiseptic and then figure out what to do next.”

I pull my phone from my jacket pocket. “Shit. My mother called five times already.”

Valerie turns to me. The room isn’t as dark anymore now that my eyes have adjusted to the gloom, and I can see her eyes go round. “They must have gotten home already.”

“Where’s your phone?”

“In my purse… which is still at the mayor’s house.”

Hell, that’s not ideal, but I can’t let Valerie notice that I’m concerned. “Let’s take care of your new tat and worry about your purse later.”

“We probably should clean your wound as well.”

I forgot about that, too distracted fucking Valerie into oblivion. “Yeah, good idea.”

“I think I know where the antiseptic could be. Call your mother before she sends the cops looking for us, thinking we’re missing.”

I’ve never been in such a messy situation before. We left way too much evidence behind. I’ve never feared getting caught because I’ve always planned my kills carefully. This is new territory for me, and it’s making me edgy in an unpleasant way.

“I’ll text her.”

“What are you going to say?”

“That I went out to grab a bite to eat. As for you, you should tell them the truth.”

“What?” Her voice rises.

“Tell them you walked in on Killer Santa murdering Mark Warner and that you chased after him, but he overwhelmed you and took you hostage.
