I donât need to hear Valerie say she loves me to know itâs true. I can read it in her eyes. Itâs my ego that craves the words, although I love that she doesnât succumb to my demands. Mixing pain with pleasure is an addiction, and like me, she wants that.
Leaning back, I zip up my pants, but Valerie remains bent over the desk with her eyes closed.
âDid you fall asleep on me, kitty cat?â
âNo. Iâm not sure I can move, is all.â
I chuckle, and she opens her eyes to glower at me. âKeep laughing. You have no idea whatâs coming for you.â
âI canât wait.â I walk closer to inspect my handiwork. The lines of my name are a little shaky, but it makes them more unique. âNot bad. We should wipe it off with antiseptic.â
âSure. I have some right here.â She sticks her hand in her skirt pocket, then takes it out again, flipping me off.
âWeâre in a lab. They must have something in here.â I offer her my hand, and Iâm surprised when she takes it.
âDo you always carve your name in your hookupsâ backs?â
My brows furrow, but my lips twitch upward while a pleasant feeling spreads through my chest. âWhoâs suffering from retroactive jealousy now?â
âIâm not.â She pouts, crossing her arms.
I grab her shoulders and invade her space, bringing my mouth inches from hers. âWhy would I write my name on anyone else? Youâre the only woman for me, kitty cat, have been since I met you.â
âGood.â
I give her a quick peck on the lips. âYouâre cute when youâre jealous.â
âIâm not jealous,â she insists, then steps away from me, grabs my switchblade from the table and puts it in her pocket. âLetâs look for the antiseptic and then figure out what to do next.â
I pull my phone from my jacket pocket. âShit. My mother called five times already.â
Valerie turns to me. The room isnât as dark anymore now that my eyes have adjusted to the gloom, and I can see her eyes go round. âThey must have gotten home already.â
âWhereâs your phone?â
âIn my purse⦠which is still at the mayorâs house.â
Hell, thatâs not ideal, but I canât let Valerie notice that Iâm concerned. âLetâs take care of your new tat and worry about your purse later.â
âWe probably should clean your wound as well.â
I forgot about that, too distracted fucking Valerie into oblivion. âYeah, good idea.â
âI think I know where the antiseptic could be. Call your mother before she sends the cops looking for us, thinking weâre missing.â
Iâve never been in such a messy situation before. We left way too much evidence behind. Iâve never feared getting caught because Iâve always planned my kills carefully. This is new territory for me, and itâs making me edgy in an unpleasant way.
âIâll text her.â
âWhat are you going to say?â
âThat I went out to grab a bite to eat. As for you, you should tell them the truth.â
âWhat?â Her voice rises.
âTell them you walked in on Killer Santa murdering Mark Warner and that you chased after him, but he overwhelmed you and took you hostage.
